Okay so it’s not quite Russia… So what mother land? Well for those that know me, know I was born and raised Canadian, but those of you who are Canadian, you know we are a cultural mosaic of people who take pride in tracing our ethnic origins. For me my ancestors like many in my home town and province came from Poland and the Ukraine.
When I kept telling Turkish people I was bound for Cairo I kept getting some pretty bad cases of “shock face” and then I woke up to find that Egypt had gone madder than the hatter at a tea party, and I am pretty sure that the girl I was planning to stay with will be on one of those Canadian Evacuation flights out of the country.
In short my dreams of a summer in early spring with dessert shores along ocean coast line are turning to dust faster than a 10,000 year old mummy suddenly exposed to a fresh gust of wind. As you may have viewed in my video with the riot cops, there has been some protesting here as well, PEACEFUL thank god but still…. I’ve stopped heading in the other direction when I see a protest. They seem to be going on almost any day, I don’t care what you are protesting or if you have riot gear on when I want chocolate cake get out of my way, a bad sugar craving this week had me navigating my way through a protest which of course, like my typical self, I managed to walk into a street divider and have three people walk into me, and then trip over a grate and nearly flatten an old man with a red flag who was chanting something. Those of you who are girls know exactly what kind of day I was having, and why it was worth nearly killing myself and someone else to get some chocolate cake. The world seems to want to fluff up and get it’s political feathers all ruffled when I am trying to be young adventurous and take in the world and all its splendour.
The long and short of it is I am looking at remapping my route. Turns out the cheapest flights home for the time I would be looking to fly out turned up in Warsaw Poland. So I think I’m Poland bound. With me new route being Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and Poland monthly after I leave Istanbul. Egypt was honestly going to be a big expense despite the fact that it was cheap once I got over there, but being that I am so darn close it didn’t seem like I should pass up the chance… well world politics says I should, so I’ll be heading North on my route, as a good Canadian should.
The flight from Istanbul to Athens is $98 it’s better than the $300 + I would have spent to fly to Egypt, The cost of a flight from Romania to Warsaw is $143 so all and all I’m saving money with the route change. I’m pretty sure the bus will be possible for travel from Greece to Bulgaria and Bulgaria to Romania. So as it stands this is the rough etch I have in my head for travel plans. I may change this if things clear up in Egypt but I’ll be setting up plans in Athens for my next stop and Egypt will be after that “IF” I decide I have to go. Oddly enough it’s cheaper to fly from Athens to Egypt then it is from here anyway.
Is Poland going to be my end stop? Not necessarily. Still waiting to hear back on my “official” college acceptance and honestly with Slovakia and Hungary hovering just on the borders of my route, part of me is going to leap for joy and bound off over there after Romania if college decided to give me the boot, and a good more than half of me hopes it does.
So all I have really decided is that my next stop will not be Egypt and Poland is looking like a good possibility in the distance or if I need a quick flight home for emergency, or to nicely end my journey with. Looks like I’ll be heading back to more familiar waters. Part of me is disappointed and part of me is still pretty excited because heck I’ll go just about anywhere, and hell I want to go everywhere.
